Methodology
How Astra reads the market.
Where the data comes from and exactly how every score, signal and status is computed.
Data sources
Prices, market caps, 24h volume, 7-day price series and CoinGecko trending searches come from the CoinGecko public API. Category (narrative) market caps come from CoinGecko categories.
Protocol TVL, chain TVL and total stablecoin supply come from DefiLlama. TVL changes compare the latest value with the value seven days earlier.
Everything refreshes about every five minutes. Each page shows the time of the data it was built from. If a source fails, the fields it feeds show “—” rather than an estimate.
Signal score (0–100)
The score measures how much is happening, not which way. A sharp fall scores as high as a sharp rise, and the direction is shown separately. It blends:
- 7-day price change, capped at ±30% (35%)
- 24h price change, capped at ±10% (20%)
- 24h volume ÷ market cap, as a percentile across tracked assets (25%)
- 7-day TVL change, capped at ±15% (10%)
- Presence and rank in CoinGecko trending searches (10%)
Missing inputs are dropped and the remaining weights re-normalised. Star brightness on the map is this score.
Star size
Star size is 24h trading volume on a logarithmic scale, so large and small markets stay readable together.
Signals
- Momentum: 7-day move of 10% or more, or otherwise a 24h move of 5% or more.
- Liquidity: protocol or chain TVL changing 5% or more over 7 days, plus total stablecoin supply.
- Volume: the three tracked assets with the highest volume-to-market-cap ratio, if above 8%.
- Narrative: a tracked CoinGecko category whose market cap moved 3% or more in 24h. Moves beyond ±25% are ignored, because they usually come from coins being added to a category rather than from the market.
- Attention: a tracked asset in CoinGecko's trending searches.
Constellations
Constellations are curated groups of related assets. Their activity is the market-cap-weighted 7-day change of their members. Status follows from it: Cooling below 0%, Emerging from 0%, Growing from 3%, Expanding from 8%, and Accelerating from 15% when at least three quarters of members are rising.
“Forming now” lists the CoinGecko categories, from a fixed set, with the largest 24h market-cap move. Each is drawn from its three largest coins.
